What is a youth injection? The treatments behind the name

By Published: Updated: 6 min readTreatments

A youth injection — known in Turkey as gençlik aşısı, literally “youth vaccine” — is a popular umbrella name for injectable treatments that support skin quality; medically, it is neither a vaccine nor a single product. Different ingredients can be used under this name, such as hyaluronic acid, amino acids, vitamins, polynucleotides or your own plasma. In Istanbul, Dr. Nil Yazıcı chooses the ingredients and the session plan after assessing your skin.

Why is it called a “vaccine” in Turkey?

The Turkish name gençlik aşısı (“youth vaccine”) is everyday language: it comes from the fact that the treatment is given by injection and from the idea of “loading” the skin with something. It has nothing to do with the immune system, it does not “vaccinate” the skin and it does not stop ageing. Knowing that the name really refers to a group of injectable skin-quality treatments helps you ask the right questions.

Which ingredients can be used under this name?

Depending on the skin assessment, the main groups a physician may choose from are:

  • Hyaluronic acid-based treatments: skin boosters, designed to support the skin's capacity to hold moisture, belong to this group.
  • Mesotherapy cocktails: blends of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants in varying proportions.
  • Polynucleotide / PDRN products: commonly known as salmon DNA (polynucleotides), used to support skin tissue quality.
  • Your own plasma: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) prepared from your blood and injected into the skin.

These ingredients are sometimes used on their own and sometimes in sequence within a plan — for example, a course focused on hydration first, followed by sessions aimed at tissue quality.

Which concerns is it considered for?

Treatments known as youth injections don't change your facial features; they work on the skin itself. They are most often discussed for:

  • Tired, dull-looking skin that has lost its vitality
  • Tightness and rough texture linked to dehydration
  • Fine lines that look more obvious because the skin is dry
  • Thinner, crêpey-looking skin on the neck, décolletage and backs of the hands

Where deep wrinkles, volume loss or sagging are the main issue, these treatments alone may not meet expectations. Other approaches may be considered instead — Botox / botulinum toxin for expression lines, or fillers for volume loss.

What a youth injection doesn't do

To set the right expectations, it helps to separate these treatments from the methods they are often confused with:

  • It doesn't relax muscles the way botulinum toxin does, so no direct effect is expected on expression lines such as frown lines or forehead lines.
  • It doesn't add volume or shape to areas such as the cheeks, chin or lips the way a filler does.
  • It doesn't focus on renewing the skin's surface layer the way a chemical peel does, and shouldn't be seen as a stand-alone answer to pigmentation.
  • It doesn't create a surgical lifting effect and won't correct marked sagging.

These limits don't make the treatment less worthwhile; they simply clarify what it is for. Its real purpose is to support the skin itself — its hydration, texture and vitality. When several goals overlap, these treatments can be combined with other methods within one plan.

How is the treatment done?

  1. Skin assessment: your skin type, sensitivity, lifestyle, medication and previous treatments are discussed.
  2. Choosing the ingredients and the plan: which product group is used, on which area and over how many sessions is decided.
  3. Treatment: the skin is cleansed, a numbing cream is applied if needed, and the product is injected with a fine needle or cannula. Timing depends on the ingredients and area, usually 20–40 minutes.
  4. Follow-up: before the next session, your skin's response is reviewed and the plan updated if needed.

Brief redness, small bumps at the injection points and occasional bruising can follow. Most people return to their normal routine the same day or the next. If you are planning a trip to Istanbul, the first conversation can take place as an online consultation, with the final plan confirmed after your in-person assessment.

Who may not be suitable?

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Active infection, cold sores or an open wound in the treatment area
  • Known allergy to any of the ingredients (fish allergy is specifically checked for salmon DNA products)
  • Certain autoimmune conditions or bleeding disorders
  • Blood-thinning medication (do not stop it without talking to your doctor)

Setting realistic expectations

With treatments known as youth injections, change is usually gradual and assessed as the course progresses. How long the effect lasts depends on the ingredients chosen, your skin's starting point, your age and habits such as sun protection. We cover this in detail in how long a youth injection lasts.

At your consultation, don't hesitate to ask: Which product will be used? Why was this ingredient chosen? How many sessions are planned, and when will we review the result? Clear answers help you understand what is actually being done, beyond a popular name.

Frequently asked questions

Is a youth injection the same as a skin booster?

A skin booster is just one of the options that can be offered under the youth injection name. “Youth injection” is a broader, everyday term that can also cover mesotherapy, polynucleotides or PRP.

At what age can you have a youth injection?

There is no single “right age”; the decision depends on your skin's needs, not your age. For younger skin, the physician may find good skincare and sun protection are enough.

Does a youth injection add volume like a filler?

No. These treatments target skin quality and do not add volume to facial features. Volume loss is assessed with other treatments such as fillers.
