Treatment options for fine lines and wrinkles

How fine lines are best approached depends on whether they appear only with facial expressions or are also visible at rest. Making that distinction is the first step of a medical assessment.

Fine lines can develop from the repeated movement of facial muscles, loss of hydration and elasticity, and the gradual loss of volume that comes with age. Botulinum toxin may be considered for lines that deepen with expression, skin boosters or polynucleotide treatments for static lines linked to dehydration, and fillers for deeper folds. In Istanbul, Dr. Nil Yazıcı decides on the options after an examination, according to the type of line.

What can contribute to it?

Facial expressions
Repeated muscle movement on the forehead, between the brows and at the corners of the eyes can make lines more visible over time.
Loss of hydration and elasticity
As the skin’s moisture and collagen decrease, fine lines can form — especially on the cheeks and around the eyes and mouth.
Volume changes
The loss of supporting tissue in the face with age can deepen folds.
Sun and smoking
Long-term sun exposure and smoking can affect the skin’s structural components and contribute to lines appearing earlier.

When a medical evaluation matters

Fine lines are usually not a medical problem. However, if you notice sudden facial asymmetry, muscle weakness or a drooping eyelid, you need an assessment by a neurologist or your GP before any aesthetic treatment. If you have had fillers or any other procedure before, be sure to mention it at your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between expression lines and static lines?

Expression lines become visible when the face moves and are usually assessed for botulinum toxin. Static lines are visible even when the face is at rest; for these, skin-quality treatments or sometimes fillers are more relevant.

Botox or fillers?

Botulinum toxin softens muscle movement, while fillers replace lost volume. Some faces benefit from both, planned together. See botulinum toxin and dermal fillers for how each is planned.

How effective are treatments for fine lines?

The effect depends on the type and depth of the line and the method chosen. Treatments aim to soften the appearance of lines; there is no guarantee that they will disappear completely.
