Treatment options for acne scars
Acne can leave marks in the form of discolouration, or as pitted and uneven texture. The options depend on the type of scar and on whether acne is still active.
Acne scars are pitted or uneven areas that form when the skin’s collagen structure is damaged as inflamed acne heals; brown or dark marks are a separate, colour-related issue. Once acne is under control, methods such as microneedling, PRP and chemical peels may be considered in suitable patients to soften the appearance of scars. In Istanbul, Dr. Nil Yazıcı identifies the type of scarring at your examination and suggests a realistic plan.
Options that may be considered
- Microneedling (Dermapen)May be considered especially for rolling and shallow boxcar scars, supporting the skin’s own repair process to soften their appearance.View Treatment
- PRP & PRFCan be planned in suitable patients alongside microneedling, to support the repair process.View Treatment
- Chemical PeelMay be considered for superficial scarring and the colour changes that often accompany scars, on its own or in sequence with other methods.View Treatment
This page is for general information and is not a diagnosis. Which option, if any, may suit you is decided after a medical assessment.
What can contribute to it?
- Severity and duration of acne
- Deep, long-lasting inflamed acne increases the likelihood of lasting textural scars.
- Squeezing and picking
- Squeezing spots can drive inflammation deeper and contribute to scarring.
- Type of scar
- Rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars respond differently to different approaches.
- Skin characteristics
- Some skin is more prone to dark marks or raised, thickened scars after healing.
When a medical evaluation matters
If active, inflamed or widespread acne is still ongoing, see a dermatologist for medical treatment of the acne before any scar treatment. If you are taking isotretinoin or have recently stopped, the timing of treatments must be discussed with your physician. For thick, raised (keloid) scars, a dermatologist’s opinion should also be sought first.
Frequently asked questions
Will acne scars disappear completely?
Treatments aim to soften the appearance of scars; complete disappearance is not usually expected. The response depends on the type and depth of the scars.
Can scar treatment start while I still have active acne?
Usually not. The acne needs to be brought under control first; procedures carried out during active inflammation can spread infection and lead to new scars.
Which options can be combined?
Microneedling, PRP and peels can often be included in the same plan, in sequence. The order and intervals are set by the physician.
Are brown marks after acne also acne scars?
No — they are a change in colour and are usually approached as pigmentation. Pitted scars, by contrast, are a textural issue.
