Pigmentation Treatment in Istanbul: A Physician-Planned Approach
For sun spots, melasma, uneven skin tone or dark marks left after acne, Dr. Nil Yazıcı assesses the type of pigmentation and your skin, then builds a personal plan. The first step is a consultation – in person in Istanbul or online before you travel.
Pigmentation treatment is an approach that combines chemical peels, pigmentation-focused mesotherapy, microneedling and home care to reduce the appearance of sun spots, melasma, uneven tone and post-acne discolouration. In Istanbul, Dr. Nil Yazıcı tailors the plan to the type of pigmentation, the skin's characteristics and the season. Melasma is a chronic condition: the aim is not a one-off erasure but long-term control, together with consistent sun protection.

Why a physician’s assessment matters
Why the physician's assessment decides the plan
Two spots that look the same can have different causes and sit at different depths; treating melasma as aggressively as a sun spot can make it more visible. Dr. Nil Yazıcı assesses the type of pigmentation, your hormonal and medication history, your skin type and the season together to decide the method and its intensity, and refers to dermatology when a lesion looks suspicious. The plan therefore covers not only treatment sessions but also follow-up and home care.
About Dr. Nil YazıcıWho may consider it?
Pigmentation treatment may be considered for people who want to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone and who can keep up regular home care and sun protection.
- Sun-related spots on the face, neck or backs of the hands
- Diagnosed melasma, or widespread patches consistent with melasma, with the need for a long-term management plan
- Brown or dark marks left after acne has healed
- A generally uneven, blotchy or dull-looking skin tone
- Pigmentation that has returned after previous treatment and needs the plan reassessed
What can it help with?
- Sun spots
- Brown spots, usually with well-defined edges, caused by years of accumulated sun exposure. Peels and pigmentation-focused treatments can lighten their appearance; sun protection is essential to prevent new ones.
- Melasma support
- A chronic form of pigmentation that can be triggered by hormonal factors, sun and visible light, typically on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Treatment aims to reduce its appearance and support control; it has a strong tendency to recur.
- Uneven skin tone
- Colour variation across the skin and a dull look, rather than one distinct spot. Combinations of superficial peels and mesotherapy are commonly considered.
- Post-acne discolouration
- Brown or dark marks that remain after a spot heals (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). This is different from pitted scarring; textural scars are assessed separately under acne scar options.
Treatment areas
Chemical peels for pigmentation
A superficial – and where appropriate medium-depth – chemical peel supports controlled renewal of the upper layers of the skin. The type and strength of acid are chosen for the type of pigmentation and the skin.
Pigmentation-focused mesotherapy
Ingredients that support a more even tone are delivered through micro-injections. The ingredients are chosen by the physician; see the mesotherapy page for details.
Microneedling-assisted treatment
Microneedling can be added, especially when post-acne discolouration and texture issues occur together. Sensitive and darker skin types need carefully chosen settings.
Home care and sun protection
Physician-recommended topical products for pigmentation and a broad-spectrum sunscreen are an integral part of the plan. For melasma, tinted sunscreens that also protect against visible light may be preferred.
How it works
Consultation and pigmentation assessment
When the pigmentation started, pregnancy, hormonal medication, sun habits and previous treatments are discussed. The type and depth of pigmentation are assessed; if a lesion looks suspicious, a dermatology assessment is recommended first. Patients abroad can begin with an online consultation, with the in-person assessment on arrival in Istanbul.
A personal plan
Which method is used, in what order and at what intervals is decided. The plan is shaped by your skin type, the season and your daily life. If needed, the skin is prepared with home care for a few weeks before treatment.
Treatment sessions
The chosen method is applied to cleansed skin; most sessions take 20–45 minutes. Your skin's reaction is assessed at each session and the next step is updated if necessary.
Follow-up and maintenance
After the initial plan, the result is reviewed together. For conditions that tend to recur, such as melasma, regular check-ups, home care and maintenance sessions when needed are planned.
Sessions and treatment plan
How is the session plan decided?
Most pigmentation plans are structured as an initial phase of 3–6 sessions, 2–4 weeks apart; the number of sessions depends on the type and depth of pigmentation and on how your skin responds. Sun spots and post-acne marks generally respond more predictably, while melasma needs long-term management and periodic maintenance. Gentler options may be preferred in the height of summer, with more intensive peel plans in autumn and winter.
What to expect, and when
First days
Depending on the method, mild redness, tightness or fine flaking may occur; most people carry on with daily life.
1–2 weeks
Flaking finishes and the skin may begin to look smoother and fresher. Sun protection is especially important during this period.
4–8 weeks
After several sessions, a gradual lightening of the spots can be expected. Responses vary from person to person.
After the initial plan
The result is reviewed together and a maintenance and home-care plan is agreed. With melasma, periodic flare-ups linked to sun and hormonal factors can occur.
Aftercare
In pigmentation treatment, what most affects the result is post-session care and daily sun protection.
- Use a broad-spectrum, high-SPF sunscreen every day – even on cloudy days – and reapply during the day.
- Do not pull off flaking skin; let it shed naturally.
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms, intense sport and excessive heat in the first days; heat can trigger melasma.
- Stop retinoids, acids and exfoliating products until your physician tells you to restart.
- Add physical protection such as a hat and shade to your sunscreen.
- Contact the treating physician if you experience redness, burning or unexpected darkening.
Limits and important considerations
Pigmentation treatment does not give the same result for every type of pigmentation, and some situations need a different assessment first.
- Melasma is chronic and recurrent; treatment can reduce its appearance, but permanent removal cannot be promised.
- Lesions that change in shape, colour or size, bleed or have newly appeared need a dermatology assessment first.
- Many peels and ingredients are avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding; the plan may be postponed.
- In darker skin types and sensitive skin, treatment at the wrong strength can cause post-inflammatory darkening.
- No treatment is carried out while there is an active infection, open wound or active cold sore in the area.
- Without consistent sun protection, pigmentation can quickly become visible again.
- Laser or light-based pigmentation treatments are not offered at this practice.
Pigmentation treatment if you are travelling to Istanbul
Pigmentation plans involve sessions spread over several weeks, so a short visit usually starts with one session and a home-care plan, with follow-up continuing online. The climate and sun exposure where you live are factored into the timing and intensity of treatment. How many sessions does pigmentation treatment take?
Most initial plans consist of 3–6 sessions, 2–4 weeks apart. Sun spots and post-acne marks can usually be assessed within this period; melasma may need long-term management and periodic maintenance. The exact plan is set after the examination.
Can melasma be cured completely?
Melasma is a chronic condition with a strong tendency to recur. With the right plan its appearance can be reduced significantly, but it can become more visible again with sun, heat and hormonal changes. The goal is therefore long-term control, with consistent sun protection and home care.
What is the best season for pigmentation treatment?
Autumn and winter, when the sun is weaker, are generally preferred for more intensive peel plans. Treatment is also possible in summer with gentler options and strict sun protection. The physician adapts the plan to the season – including the season and climate at home if you are travelling from abroad.
Can I return to work – or travel home – straight after treatment?
After superficial peels and mesotherapy, most people return to work the same day. Mild redness and fine flaking for a few days are possible. With deeper peels, flaking can be more noticeable for a few extra days, so the timing is planned around important events and your travel dates.
Do you use lasers?
No. Pigmentation plans are built with chemical peels, pigmentation-focused mesotherapy, microneedling and home care. Where a laser is needed, you can be referred to a centre that offers it.
Can I have pigmentation treatment during pregnancy?
Many peeling agents and injectable ingredients are avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In this period, the focus is usually on sun protection and skincare considered safe, with treatments postponed until later.
Are acne scars and acne marks the same thing?
No. Brown or dark marks after acne are a colour change and are addressed with a pigmentation plan. Pitted or textural scars are a different problem, for which texture-focused options such as microneedling come to the fore.
