Back to daily life after injectable treatments: what to expect
After injectable treatments such as botulinum toxin or fillers, most people return to their usual routine the same day. Swelling or bruising can appear in the first 24–48 hours, and you may be asked to avoid strong sun, saunas and strenuous exercise for the first day. With botulinum toxin and fillers the result usually settles at around two weeks, so it is more comfortable to plan treatment at least two weeks before an important event.
Treatment day and the first 24–48 hours
Most injectable treatments are quick, and most people return to their usual routine the same day. Swelling or bruising can appear at the injection points in the first 24–48 hours; after fillers this is somewhat more likely. You may be asked to avoid strong sun, saunas and strenuous exercise for the first day after treatment. Aftercare advice specific to your treatment is explained to you.
When does the result settle?
Botulinum toxin usually starts to work within 2–3 days and settles by around the second week. With dermal fillers the volume effect is visible straight away and becomes clearer once the early swelling has gone down. With both, the result is usually assessed at around two weeks; whether a review is needed, and when, is agreed at the examination. Our article on when Botox starts working covers the timeline in more detail.
If you have an important event
Avoid treatment right before an important event; allowing at least two weeks gives any swelling and bruising time to settle and the result time to develop. If you mention the date at your examination, the timing can be planned around it.
Treatments planned as a course
Mesotherapy, PRP, microneedling and chemical peels are usually planned as sessions repeated a few weeks apart. The number of sessions and the intervals are set at the examination, according to your skin; discussing them against your own schedule at the start makes planning easier.
When to seek help without waiting
Seek immediate medical attention for unusual or increasing pain, white, grey or blue skin, or any vision change during or after filler treatment. For vision changes, speech problems or sudden weakness, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112 in Turkey; abroad, use the local emergency number. Do not wait for a WhatsApp or form reply; also inform the treating physician. Spreading redness, increasing warmth or fever also require prompt medical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can treatment be done on the day of the examination?
If it is judged suitable at the examination, many injectable treatments can be done the same day. Sometimes it is better to wait, for example if your medication needs reviewing or further assessment is needed.
When can I exercise after treatment?
You may be asked to avoid strenuous exercise for the first day. Advice can differ by treatment and area, so the timing for you is explained after your treatment.
Is a review appointment needed?
After botulinum toxin and fillers, the result usually settles at around two weeks. Whether a review is needed, and when, is agreed at the examination.
